Course purpose

You will need to complete these six (6) units if you are applying for one, or more, of the following contractor licences:

  • Residential General Builders (Class 1 and 10)(any height)
  • Residential additions (any height)
  • Residential alterations and/or renovations (structural only)
  • Transportable building construction and installation.

Course requirements

To successfully complete this course, you are required to complete six (6) nationally accredited units of competency. These units are:
1. BSBESB402 Establish legal and risk management requirements of new business ventures
2. BSBESB401 Research and develop business plans
3. CPCCBC4007 Plan building or construction work
4. CPCCBC4004 Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects
5. CPCCBC4003 Select, prepare and administer a construction contract
6. CPCCBC4024 Resolve business disputes

On completion of all, or some, of these units, you will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the completed units above.

Completed one or more units elsewhere? Not a problem, there is a task in the course where you tell us what units you need to complete and we will amend your training plan and invoice.

Enrolment period, or duration, is six (6) months. That is, you need to complete all training and assessment within this enrolment period. The amount of training and assessment which occurs during the enrolment period will be dependant on a number of factors including, but not limited to, your current level of knowledge and skills, breaks in study, distractions, etc.

You complete the course entirely at home online.

To complete the course at home online, you will need a computer/laptop/phone/tablet, etc with a webcam and connected to the internet. You will not need to purchase any additional resources such as programs, materials, books, etc.

Fees

The fees for this course is $2200. This is the full Fee For Service price for all six (6) units, as no subsidies or funding applies or is available. See the table below for individual pricing if you do not need to complete all six (6) units.

Fees can be paid by credit card (no surchage applies) or direct deposit.

Fees are payable once all asseessments have been successfully completed, and before we will issue you your certificate.

PCD Training also does not participate in any loan schemes, such as VET Student Loans, etc. So you will not incur a debt with the government by enroling in this course.

Please note:
Keep in mind these few things -
1. You will need to provide suitable documentary evidence, be required to attend an interview, answer a number of quiz questions and provide an experience video. This process can take some time to complete.

2. The fees for RPL are the same as enrolling in the course and completing the assessments, you don't save any money.

3. In alot of cases it can take longer to complete going through RPL than just completing normally.

Notes

Entry requirements

There are no designated entry requirements for this course. However, you will need a sound working knowledge of basic maths, and be able to read, write and understand standard English, similar to what is used in this information. If you are unsure of your Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) standard, please request our LLN Tool.

You will also be required to download and upload files. You will also need access to a computer/laptop/tablet, etc which has, or on which you are able to install, a web-cam and has internet access.

Assessment

Participants will be required to complete a range of assessments, including uploading of files of work completed and video responses. Assessment requirements are outlined in the relevant unit.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is also available. This will require uploading of evidence documents, the completion of a skills history document, an online interview which will be recorded, recording of an experience video, answering quizz questions, etc.

Why PCD?

You probably haven’t heard of PCD Training before and might be just a little worried as a result. We totally understand! Ask yourself (and other training providers) these questions when comparing us to others:

Holding a building licence from a licensing authority shows that the person has appropriate knowledge and experience in the building industry. Knowledge and experience that can be imparted to you to help you with your contracting business. Both our trainer’s hold a current building licence.

3. Can I start the course before paying?
Starting a course before having to pay shows that the training provider stands behind the quality of training they offer, and not out to rip your money from your pockets. With PCD Training, you can start (and even complete) the course before paying. If you are not happy with it at any point, simply stop doing it as you haven’t paid anything up front.

4. It’s two business units that I must do, but will it be relevant for my contracting business?
With PCD Training, YES. Some providers just use generic training resources that have been developed by a third-party company. These materials are generic in nature and cover business generally. We have developed our own learning resources and assessments and have contextualised our materials specifically to a building or trade contracting business.

5. Every state has different legislation, I live in South Australia so will I learn things relevant to me in South Australia
With PCD Training, definitely. Not only have we contextualised our training resources to a building and trade contracting business, but we have also contextualised them specifically to South Australia. So, you will learn relevant things for your contracting business IN South Australia.

6. When will I get my certificate?
As soon as you have successfully completed all tasks, and we have received your fees, you will be emailed a copy of your certificate INSTANTLY. You will also be able to access a copy in our system. Under the standards for registration, RTO’s must issue certification within 30 days. At PCD Training we do it instantly.

7. I haven’t heard of PCD Training before, how long has it been going?
PCD Training has been training since 1998. Our RTO number, 1820, indicates that we have been around for a while.

8. Your price seems to be in between other providers. I have seen it as cheap as $330 and as dear as $1000, why is that?
The cheap ones could be using the generic resources that costs them about $40 from their supplier and require you to do 200, 500, or more, word essays. The dearer ones usually have high overheads such as several staff, offices, cars, etc that they must pay for. We consider our price to be fair for quality training and we have limited overheads.

FAQ's

1. I am after a contractor licence, is there anything else I need to be able to work for myself?
Yes. There are two types of licences you will need: a contractor licence and a supervisor licence.

2. What is the difference between the two licences, I thought I just had to have a contractor licence?
A supervisor licence lets you do or supervise the work only, it doesn’t let you do anything else. A contractor licence lets you contract or run a business only. So to be able to work for yourself you need the two licences together, or have someone with the licences if you are going to operate as a company, etc.

3. What do I need to do to get a supervisor licence?
You usually need to sit a technical interview with Consumer and Business Services (CBS). Check with them or Sam Cottell from SA Trade Licensing for details.

4. What do I need to get a contractor’s licence?
Usually you need three main things: a business criteria course (this course you are looking at with us), a certificate of eligibility for building indemnity insurance and a national police clearance check no older than 12 months old. Check with CBS or Sam Cottell from SA Trade Licensing for details.

5. It’s a bit confusing with these licences, is there somewhere where I can get more information?
Definitely. We highly recommend to touch base with Sam Cottell from SA Trade Licensing, you can reach Sam by email at: sam@tradesa.com.au Sam is ex-manger of the licensing section for CBS and knows all the ins and outs with licensing. Alternatively, if you don’t want to engage Sam’s services or pay for a consult, contact CBS and ask them what you would like to know. However Sam can help with the whole process and help you prepare for the technical interview as the fail rate is about 40% - 60%.

6. With your business criteria course, how long roughly does the online option take to complete?
Unfortunately we can’t give an accurate time as everyone is different. As a ballpark allow around six (6) months to complete. However this is purely a ballpark.

7. Do I need a webcam and what is it used for?
You definitely need a webcam and it takes a snapshot of you answering a question in an assessment, so we know it’s you completing the course and not someone else. We also have to cover specific things in the unit descriptor, such as communication skills. The easiest way to do this in an online mode is get you to record video answering a question in our system.

8. Can I complete the six (6) units in a workshop?
We only offer a workshop option for the two BSB units, you can only complete the four CPCCBC units by online. If you come to a workshop for the two BSB units, while we can’t guarantee you will complete in the two days (a number of factors can affect such as English is your second language, etc) it is very unlikely that you won’t complete at the workshop and need to complete work at home.

9. How do I go about booking for a workshop and when is your next workshop coming up for the two BSB units?

10. If I decide to enrol, is there help and support if I need it?

11. When do I receive my material for the course?
All material and assessments are available as soon as you enrol. You do not have to wait for us to send anything out to you, as soon as you have access to your course you can start.
